Angry Birds Get an Assist into Space

So Angry Birds Space is launching this week – where better than with a giant slingshot from the Space Needle in Seattle?

That’s why a 35-foot tall red Angry Bird is languishing in a 300-foot slingshot, which dangles from the 605-foot-tall Space Needle. Rovio Entertainment representatives spiffing the promotion call it a “supersized” slingshot, and it’s emblazoned with the name of sponsor T-Mobile.

Nope, Rovio isn’t really going to shoot the bird into space; probably a good thing, because careful aim could be crucial. It came to roost on March 22 when Angry Birds Space launched, and is expected to hang out there for a few more days.

The familiar red bird drew a few appreciative glances from Seattleites enjoying the weekend sun. However, the video game bird isn’t the first or probably even strangest creature to decorate the Needle, which was built for the 1962 Seattle World's Fair and is celebrating its 50th birthday this year.

The Space Needle gets decorated regularly for Seattle festivals and events; it is topped with a tree at Christmas time, and fireworks are launched from it on New Year’s and the Fourth of July. Strategic lighting has turned the rotating restaurant on top into a flying saucer; it has flown banners for various Seattle sports teams; and at least once a giant crab dangled from the Needle.

So, a video game bird has arrived? Enjoy your temporary nest.
