Motorola's XOOM "project" turns out to be the Android ICS update indeed, rolling now to select owners

When Motorola began sending emails to select owners of the XOOM tablet, that it is about to start a special project soon, and continue over the weekend, we hoped it is the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update.

It turned out indeed the case, but with a few caveats - only those with Google Experience Wi-Fi or 4G LTE XOOMs, which are members of the official Motorola forums and Feedback Network need apply. Oh, and you need to live in the US, too.

Here is the initial statement Moto sent out:

Thanks for your patience as we've waited for this project to begin. Because we are dealing with a Google Experience Device (GED) we have less insight to timing than we would usually have.

However, I'm happy to announce that we will start the update this evening. Because it was delayed a few days, we will also have additional time to test; we will let it run through the weekend.

The Motorola XOOM has already been equipped with fairly stable ICS builds via the ROM modding community, so owners are not exactly waiting with baited breath for this "project" to bless all XOOMs, but it's nice to have official options.
